Acuptuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that uses tiny, hair-thin, sterile needles to puncture the skin at specific points for the treatment of a variety of ailments. These specific locations are called acupuncture points. There are hundreds of acupuncture points covering your body from head to toe.

The most commonly used acupuncture points are located on the arms and legs and allow for easy access without the need to remove your clothing. In some cases, the team may recommend acupuncture points on your back, abdomen, or shoulders, which require you to undress. In these cases, the team provides blankets and sheets to drape you for modesty and comfort.

How does acupuncture work?

According to TCM theory, acupuncture regulates the body’s energy, called qi — pronounced “chi.” Qi normally flows smoothly throughout your body, but when you’re ill or injured, the normal flow is blocked. Acupuncture is used to unblock areas where qi has become trapped in order to restore normal flow and regulate bodily functions.

Acupuncture can help with the following conditions:

  • Back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Sports injuries
  • Allergies
  • Stress

Depending on your condition, the team may recommend acupuncture treatment for you.

What can I expect during an acupuncture session?

During your acupuncture session, you’ll lie down on a comfortable, padded table — undressing privately as needed in order to access the treatment site — and be covered with blankets or sheets, if appropriate. Your acupuncturist asks you a series of questions to understand your symptoms, areas of discomfort, and goals for treatment.

Next, your acupuncturist cleans your skin at the treatment site with rubbing alcohol. Then, your acupuncturist will gently tap the needles into your skin at various acupuncture points. In most cases, the needles go into your skin at a depth of a few millimeters, though larger areas of the body — such as the thigh muscles — can accommodate deeper needle insertion.

When the needles are placed, you’ll feel a slight pricking on pinching sensation. Once the needles are in, you may feel nothing or you may notice an achy, pulsing sensation. If you’re ever uncomfortable, notify your acupuncturist so they can adjust or remove the needles as needed.

After your treatment — which lasts 30-60 minutes — your acupuncturist removes all the needles and cleans your skin once more. You get dressed privately, if needed, and return to your normal routine.
